BkCn LadyJ: she is on her way
Maryerc: yes she is
DaynaChess: Thanks, can't wait :)
Maryerc: me either
BkCn LadyJ: I know you will all be impressed with her - we just had a small get together and she is one nice lady
Pridefmly: hello, i am so excited
DaynaChess: Love her web site
Maryerc: that's nice to know
JAK: I'm here, I think!
BkCn LadyJ: the lady that does will be here also - her name is Cissy
BkCn Zoe: Welcome :)
DaynaChess: Hi Jayne
Avendoral: Hi Jak.
JAK: Thank you. I'm delighted to be here.
Maryerc: hi jayne
Cinnam9825: Hi Jayne
JAK: I think I'm getting the hang of this.
TopherKing: Hello Jayne
Adairski: Hi Jayne, welcome
JAK: Hello, everyone!
DaynaChess: When is your new book coming out, Jayne?
BkCn LadyJ: Jayne I would like to introduce you to Scottish she is the leader of your reading group
JAK: This is going to be one heck of a busy Spring for me, book-wise
BkCn Zoe: We'll get started in a minute folks
Scottish63: Thank you Judi Anne
BkCn Zoe: Hold on :)
BkCn LadyJ: Jayne what are you working on now?
JAK: First, there's the paperback rollover of FLASH in March, Then EYE OF THE BEHOLDER in April for my Krentz name. At about the same time I've got the paperback of my Amanda Quick book, WITH THIS RING coming out in February
JAK: questions?
BkCn LadyJ: Can we expect any Castles out soon?
Adairski: Jayne, one of the many things I enjoy about your books is the way your lead characters resolve conflict together (instead of hating-each-other-yet-sleeping-together until the last chapter). How did that evolve?
TopherKing: Jayne, Are any of your Jayne Castle books coming out this summer
DaynaChess: Jayne, are any of your books in large print?
JAK: Good question -- also almost impossible to answer. The truth is, there is no fiction without conflict. The hard part is figuring out the conflict. Part of the answer, I think, comes from life experience (ie growing older!).
TopherKing: Jayne, What is your favorite book that is currently in print?
Pridefmly: Hi, Jayne, do you plan to do a book tour to South Mississippi in the forseeable future?
JAK: Okay, I think I'm finally in sync here. No tours of South Miss planned, but who knows?
DaynaChess: ? Where will you be touring, Jayne?
JAK: No tours planned yet but I'll keep you posted on the site...
DaynaChess: ! BTW, great site, grin!
JAK: The credit for the site goes to the web-goddess: Cissy
Cissy: :-)
Cardin3838: LOl jayne. Maybe Cissy can help me with mine! lol
JAK: Cissy can do anything!
Adairski: Good for Cissy for getting the site going in the first place!
Cissy: lol... Cissy is not willing to test that theory too far
JAK: If you want to know more about Cissy, check out my website
Adairski: We JAK fans appreciate it!
Scottish63: I visit the site regularly and absolutely love it!
Cardin3838: I will!
JAK: Always glad to have regulars at the site.
BkCn LadyJ: I get Cissy first
JAK: You can't have her...
Scottish63: LOL BkCnLadyJ
DaynaChess: ! LOL
Cissy: you know this would be so much more exciting if you were two handsome men
JAK: It's always more exciting with two handsome men...
Cissy: lol!
TopherKing: Jayne, I like the fact that your heroines are not waiting to be saved!
BkCn LadyJ: ~~~~~~Waiting Patiently(?) in the Queue is Adairski,BBAZID,Pridefmly,TJ,Cabell,LaurelLyda
JAK: I dont' think women have ever really waited to be saved in real life -- just in fiction. So I don't write I don't write fiction in which they sit around waiting to be saved!
Scottish63: That is one of the things we all say we love about your books.
JAK: Okay, okay, I'll wait for my turn..
Cardin3838: lol
Adairski: LOL, Jayne
LaurelLyda: LOL Jayne you don't have to wait :)
JAK: waiting....
LaurelLyda: We, in the bottom bunk must wait our turn to ask a question.
Scottish63: Its always your turn Jayne : )
Cinnam9825: How Many names do you use and what are they besides Castle and James?
JAK: Just got the formal explanation of protocol. Duh.
JAK: How many names? Let me count them.....At the present, I'm using three: Castle, Krentz and Quick. Used James for a while back in the 80s.
BkCn LadyJ: oh no - missed one of your names - now have to go on new books search :-)
JAK: Cissy has listed all of my names on my web site
DaynaChess: I read you on the train when I commute to work
JAK: That's me -- one step above train food!
DaynaChess: hahahaha
TJ Cabell: I loved Shield
JAK: Yeah, I love those futuristics, too. I grew up on science fiction -- the only problem was that it didn't have enough romance in it in those days
TJ Cabell: I loved Shield's Lady...do you plan to continue that book with others about that world...it really is fascinating
JAK: I plan to continue futuristic romance under my Castle name. Thanks!
JAK: Different worlds, though.
DaynaChess: ! Love New Seattle!
JAK: The thing I really enjoy about futuristics is the paranormal element.
JAK: As opposed to Old Seattle....
DaynaChess: Nah, old Seattle's pretty cute too )
Adairski: Never been to the Old one ;-)
JAK: The old one is pretty cool, too -- that's where I live.
BBAZID: I love the similies used throughout your books -- keying from the title. Wonderful idea.
JAK: I like to imbed themes in my stories. Glad you appreciate them!
JAK: About the titles....
DaynaChess: Jayne, whatever happened to Stephanie James and her "alpha males"?
JAK: The alpha males are still out there but I've let the SJ name slide for a while.
DaynaChess: !I wanted to smack most of them!
Adairski: LOL, Dayna
JAK: I think alpha males are at the heart of the romance novel because they are the source of the conflict .
DaynaChess: !Duh, of course :)
JAK: Everyone says they want to smack the alpha males but they keep coming back for 'em. Sort of like stories about virgins. -- everyone still loves those tales.
LaurelLyda: Hi. Well, my question is this. Why the different names? Is it the time periods? It makes it very confusing for some of your fans.
Cissy: Jayne, wanting to smack some of your heroes has never stopped me (OR your heroines) from loving them *g* It only adds to their charm
JAK: Different names to let readers know what kind of story they're picking up each time. But no secrets..
LaurelLyda: I have found that there are a lot of your fans, not aware of your other names.
JAK: I chose the different names originally for contractual reasons. But in the past few years the different names have been to help readers choose the kind of stories they want.
LaurelLyda: I also wanted to say that I really liked your hair cut in the back of Deep Waters. It looks nice that way.
JAK: Yeah, I've noticed that little problem too. Dang!
Pridefmly: Jayne, I love your Amanda Quick books, they make me laugh, cry and keeps me in suspense. Keep up the good work
JAK: Glad you're enjoying them.
Pridefmly: my husband even takes a peek or two at them, lol,
JAK: Your husband?
DaynaChess: Pride, mine too, lol
TJ Cabell: I've read all of your books, but I think the sci-fi paranormal have more depth -- do you feel that you put more into the futuristic and paranormal?
JAK: Not more depth -- it just so happens that those kinds of stories appeal to you more. But I'm glad!
Mboyl: Writing under different pen names...do you ever get confused as to what story goes with what person?
JAK: Nope, I don't get confused because I can only concentrate on one story at a time.
Hbranhsue: Jayne- who are your favorite authors - when you have time to read?
JAK: I read all of my friends (and that is quite a list) Let's see: We have: Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Elizabeth Lowell, Stella Cameron, Suzanne Simmons.
Bill3nancy: In your futuristics did you come up with the philosophical angle first, then build the world--or vice versa?
JAK: Right! I come up with the philosophy that will serve as the basi for the science and the paranormal elements first. Then I build the world around those elements. Good question!
BBAZID: Do you ever feel more pressured than you like by contracts? Having to "hurry" on a bok?
JAK: As far as pressure goes, the worst part was in the old days when I wrote for series romance -- no margin for contract date slippage there!
SStev816: You mentioned your web page. What is the address, please.
JAK: address of web page is www.krentz-quick.com
LaurelLyda: Jayne, what is your writing schedule? Do you write a certain amount of hours each day, or during the night?
JAK: When I left my day job, I took the same work habits into my writing job: I start work about seven in the morning, work until lunch (with time off or phone calls, etc.) then work for two more hours. After that I go shopping at Nordstroms and do my daily workout routine.
TJ Cabell: You create such unique characters...do you create them or the story first?
Cardin3838: lol happens to us all Reader.
JAK: Regarding the relationship between characters and story: That's a tough question to answer because they're so interrelated. One drives the other. But I'd have to say that the characters' world views come first.
Cardin3838: I agree
ReaderMK: hahah
Adairski: Jayne, I wanted to tell you what a wonderful service you provide as a writer. I discovered your books (starting with "Trust Me") at a very rough time in my life. Reading your stories brought me much joy, laughter and hope, and I look forward to each book.
JAK: Thanks, Adairski!
LaurelLyda: Can you tell us what you are working on right now.
Adairski: Thank you for "indirectly" being my friend and God bless you!
Pridefmly: i have to second that Adairski!!!!
JAK: Right now I'm working on my next Krentz book -- which will be out next January.
Adairski: And thank YOU, dear heart!
SStev816: How do you choose your female characters' names? They aren't names that would shout romantic at one.
JAK: Names? Let me tell you, after you've written as many books as I have, you've used up every good name you know. You have to resort to the obituaries and the phone book! But the truth is, I can't sit down to write until I've got names that somehow suit the characters.
Scottish63: I hadn't thought of that. What a wonderful idea!
ReaderMK: is there a connection to the setting and the characters
JAK: Connections to settings and characters are vital for me. One fuels the other. One of the reasons I set so many stories in Seattle and the Northwest is because that setting really suits the kind of characters I do -- from the entrepreneurial environment to the Pacific Rim cuisine.
ReaderMK: it is so beautiful were you raised here
LaCorsaire: Jayne, are there any plans to rerelease the Bentley books?
JAK: My parents are from Washington State.
JAK: No plans as of now to release the Bentleys. Thanks for asking.
BISHOP1228: Regarding the Quick books, do you have any plans to do a sequel or revisit characters to any previous books?
JAK: Funny you should ask about sequels : I THEE WED (my next hardcover due out this Spring) is a sort of sequel to WITH THIS RING (the paperback due out in Feb.)
Hbranhsue: Jayne - unfortunately I have to go to bed if I want to get up tomorrow - thank you for spending this time with with us. Goodnight!
JAK: I think I've already used Adair, but thanks, anyway!
ReaderMK: the fun of the quirkie is the best part of the stories
Adairski: Aw darn, lol!
LaCorsaire: Jayne, of all of your books which are your personal faves?
JAK: My personal favorite is always the book I'm working on at this very moment. It's the only one I think about. Once a story is told, I lose interest in it and go on to the next one.
JaneE2059: Are they the same characters in your new book....as in With this Ring?
JAK: Not the same characters -- but the plot thread is related
Sue3027: Did you base the household gadgets in Absolutely Positively on reality? and if so where can we get them?
JAK: Regarding the household gadgets in AP: I based them on wishful thinking!
LaurelLyda: In many of your books the characters have alternative livestyles. Is this writing from experience?
BkCn LadyJ: Jayne - and we were all hoping that they were for real
Scottish63: I was absolutely dreaming of that kitchen!
JAK: I've always had an interest in alternative lifestyles -- did my masters thesis on that subject in library school, as a matter of fact. I think the alternative worldview is important for the rest of us. Keeps us from getting too mired in the old ways.
LaCorsaire: Jayne, what did you think of the The Movie Channel's cable movie of your book, The Waiting Game?
Scottish63: I'm glad someone finally asked that one!
JAK: My first book-made-into-a-movie just went to prove what every other author who has ever been through the experience told me: If you didn't know you wrote the book, you wouldn't recognize it! But it was kind of fun, anyway -- especially the handcuffs.
Cissy: the movie's only redeeming feature! *g*
Adairski: How much of yourself, personality-wise, can be found in your characters? Was there a book that had a lot of *you* in it?
BkCn LadyJ: I would like to see more of my favorites into movies but don't like the way that they are
JAK: Well, you certainly won't find my looks in the books, but in my hero and heroine, you will always find elements of my own personal world view and philosophy. (You'll notice that a lot of my characters are vegetarians? Or, at thvery least fishetarians?)
JaneE2059: lol
Scottish63: I was wondering how you get the basics for your characters, through people watching or pure imagination.
JAK: Pure imagination.
Andriana58: in most of your books, your characters seem to always eat vegetarian type foods. Are you a vegetarian?
JAK: Yep -- that's because my husband and I are vegetarians (with the occasional lapse into fish).
Andriana58: thanks
SStev816: Do you work on more than one book at a time? Or do you finish one book then start the next during the editing of the first?
JAK: I can only work on one book at a time.
Adairski: Jayne, should romance writers know about "love" to write it well, or is fantasy the key?
JAK: Fantasy is the key. If you know how to love with the heart and the mind, you don't need to know anything else
Adairski: <---writing that one down!
SStev816: How many books do you write in a year? Or maybe a better way to phrase it is.....how long does it take for you to write one book?
JAK: I usually write two books a year. ga
LaCorsaire: Jayne, what do you think about the recent trend of some authors rewriting their earlier works? Is this something you might consider doing for say your Stephanie James books?
JAK: I can't bear to even think about going back into an old book. Once I've written a story, it's finished for me. I have no interest in opening it up again and changing it.
Sue3027: ME! I remember one of your characters was into Yoga. Do you do yoga?
JAK: I have a strong interest in yoga and other forms of metaphysics -- thank my mother who has had a lifelong interest in the study of metaphysics.
Pridefmly: Jayne and everyone! i am sorry but it is bedtime for me. I really enjoyed this. Hope to do this again soon.
Sue3027: ME AGAIN! Do you do Kripalu...I have just started that in May.
BkCn LadyJ: TRIVIA - the majority of romance authors are happily married and not the second time around
JAK: Nope -- not familiar with Kripalu.
Scottish63: Jayne, how did you get started in writing and how hard was it for you to finish your first manuscript?
SStev816: When did you start writing? And who would you say are your early influences, if any?
JAK: It took me six years to get my first book published, if that tells you anything. Of course, that may only go to show that I had a lot to learn! My early influences were Robert Heinlein, Andre Norton, Nancy Drew and the Walter Farley horse books.
Adairski: What does Jayne Ann Krentz do for fun/relaxation?
JAK: for fun and relaxation I cook, read romantic-suspense and sit on a beach in Hawaii.
Adairski: LOL, that wouldn't surprise me
JAK: Oh, yeah, and I write...
Scottish63: Do you create recipes or do you just try new ones when you cook for fun?
Adairski: LOL, Jayne, of course
BkCn LadyJ: Jayne but lots of rain there
SStev816: Has the explosion of the Internet affected you in any major way as an author? Do you feel closer to fans this way or are book signings
BkCn LadyJ: at least everytime I am there
Scottish63: I'm determined to go with you next time you go Judi Anne! Lol
Adairski: I was just typing that, Sherri
JAK: The internet does offer a new way to connect with fans. I'm enjoying my first ever web site and the bulletin board connected to it (thanks to Cissy, the web goddess).
BBAZID: Do you ever begin with a title since your themes are so tightly woven?
JAK: Usually, the title doesn't come to me until I'm half way into a book.
Adairski: I've never been able to get in on the website chat. AOL's browser, I suppose
Scottish63: When you begin writing a book do you only have the basics of the characters and plot or more?
Cissy: We have a new chat room set up, Adair. Try it again when you get a chance.
Adairski: Cissy, thanks, I will!
JAK: When I start a book, I've got a pretty good plot outline in hand. But by the time I've finished a book, everything has changed!
Eleanor494: Which character is your favourite and why??
JAK: Don't ask!
JAK: My favorite character -- like my favorite book -- is always the one I'm working on at the moment.
Sue3027: How about ME! Are you doing a tour with I THEE WED?
JAK: No tours, although I will be doing a signing here in Seattle.
BkCn LadyJ: Jayne when is that?
JAK: Gee, I don't think NH is close to Seattle....
DebMulMan: Jayne, what would you do if you found out that you've been plagiarized...even if the work stolen was not one of your published pieces?
Scottish63: Wow! What a question!
JAK: Ignore it. Voice is what makes a writer distinctive and it's impossible to plagiarize voice.
DebMulMan: well it just happened to me about 15 mins ago, so it seemed like a good idea
BkCn Zoe: Good Answer!
Cardin3838: I just got your book today! lol
DebMulMan: that's kind of my take on it, Jayne, though it smarts :(
Adairski: Sorry to hear that, Deb
DebMulMan: thanks :)
Eleanor494: Do you base your characters on real people or from imagination??
JAK: Give one plot outline to ten different writers and you'll get ten different stories.
DebMulMan: Jayne, I just wanted to say that I love your work..especially the allegorical quality, and Ravished is my favorite, right behind your paranormals :)
JAK: Thanks, DebMulMan
Scottish63: We just finished discussing that one last week Deb.
JAK: I've noticed that more people online enjoy the paranormals.
Cissy: We're doing Ravished in out next Readers' Chat at the site.
Sue3027: What do you think of the prices of some of your older books?
DebMulMan: loved the Fire/Gold books :)
JAK: The price of some of my older books is amazing. Can't afford 'em, myself. Lucky my Mom kept a complete collection. If we ever get desperate, we can sell them.
Cardin3838: LOL Jayne
DebMulMan: I just re-read Shield's Lady the other day
Eleanor494: Do you base your characters on real people or from imagination?? (asked but not sure question was noticed)
BkCn LadyJ: Cissy - what time? that is my second favorite ones
Cissy: I'll IM you off-chat, so I don't interrupt more. :-)
Eleanor494: and would appreciate web site address).
JAK: I base my characters on archetypes of my imagination -- not real people (think I want to get sued?)
Cissy: Never mind, I'll answer here. *g* Thu night 10p Eastern. http://www.krentz-quick.com/chat
JAK: Besides, archetypes make more interesting characters in a story.
SStev816: I just wanted to say that the 1st books I read of yours were Mistress and Trust Me. I read them in the same month and when I went looking for other books by the same author discovered you were one and the same!!!!
Scottish63: LOL Jayne!
JAK: Trust Me, I Absolutely, Positively never tried to hide my pen names!
Adairski: LOL Jayne!!
BkCn LadyJ: Jayne have you ever thought of doing a family series - like the MacFaddens again?
Adairski: That wit is another reason we love your books :-)
Cardin3838: Yes it is Adair!
JAK: Thanks. Believe it or not, not everyone likes my sense of humor!
Cardin3838: I do!
Adairski: Ah well, don't believe THEM Jayne. Your public loves you.
SStev816: <----who got confused looking Quick & Krentz up in the card catalog
JAK: I always figure that people who share the same sense of humor were born to be friends.
BkCn LadyJ: Jayne they just don't know a good thing then
DebMulMan: I'd say The NYT agrees with Jayne
Adairski: Sorry, Sue, I'm just kibitzing here...
Cinnam9825: Where do you get your Pen Names are they family names?
JAK: Some of my early pen names were family names but Jayne Castle happens to be the name that I was given when I was born. Krentz is my married name. And Amanda Quick I chose because there didn't seem to be a lot of authors in the "Q" section of the local bookstore.
Cinnam9825: thank you
Adairski: Do the stories about young innocents sell better than the stories about older women? (As I head toward forty, I like the latter)
JAK: more room for people to use their imaginations.
Cissy: I always "see" nearly the same hero in your books however he's described.
Adairski: I must confess though, I love the short, myopic gals, since I AM one ;-)
Adairski: But you're right, Jayne imagination is better.
JAK: There will always be room for heroines who wear glasses.
JAK: The really great thing about romance readers, I've discovered, is that they are expert readers in every sense of the word -- they know how to read and enjoy fantasy. They understand intuitively how fantasy works. What a gift!
Sue3027: ME! Do you have input on the great cover designs for your books?
Sue3027: Yes, fantasy gets you away from your problems not adds to them!
JAK: I get asked for cover input, but I'm not an artist and I don't think in visual terms
Cardin3838: I love fantasy! An escape from reality is nice!
JAK: so I'm not the best person to ask for cover art ideas. I can, however, look at cover art designs and respond to them with very strong reactions.
Adairski: I liked your rebuttal to the latest trend of saying that men write better romances.
JAK: Thanks, Adairski.
Cardin3838: I agree Adair!
Sue3027: I don't know any men that do.
Adairski: are you becoming a crusader for the art form?
JAK: A crusader for romance? I've always felt very strongly that romance fiction is a vital and important part of popular fiction.
Scottish63: I'm curious about your historical heroines. They are always different from the "norm". What decided you to go that direction?
JAK: Actually, it was doing my first futuristic romances that convinced me that I would enjoy doing historicals. There are some very strong parallels between the two genres.
BkCn LadyJ: TRIVIA - the average age and education of the romance reader is 25 up and she has at least a bachelor or higher degree
Cardin3838: Is that true or false Judi Anne? lol
BkCn LadyJ: TRUE
Andriana58: nice to know I fall into that category Judi Anne!!!
Scottish63: You mean not just lonely housewives Judi Anne? (sarcasm dripping)
Cardin3838: I am in that one Suz! lol
JAK: One thing you can say about romance readers: they are literate by definition!
Cardin3838: Yes we are!
BkCn LadyJ: nope we want something out of life and then need to relax with the great hero
Cardin3838: True
Scottish63: That is a great way to put it Judi Anne!
Adairski: And we no longer have to feel embarassed by reading romance, either!
Sue3027: I LOVE how you give all your heroines interesting hobbies and careers. How do you think of these and how much research do you do on each one
JAK: My heroines (and heroes) get to be interested in stuff that interests me. One of the side benefits of writing.
BkCn LadyJ: Jayne with her great imagination has been able to relieve us of our tension and give us a good laugh or cry as we needed them - and for that we are very THANKFUL
JAK: I choose a topic that interest me and which I wish to learn more about. Then I use it as an excuse for a book.
Adairski: Well said, Judi Anne
SStev816: Just one of those 'out there' type questions...If you'd been born 150 yrs ago, what do you think you'd be doing at this time in your life?
JAK: Reading 19th century gothic novels.
SStev816: Not writing them?
BkCn LadyJ: Jayne do you think you would have been a writer then?
Sue3027: LOL only kidding!!
JAK: Trying to write 'em.
BkCn LadyJ: if not then we will do 2 more questions and let Jayne get back to doing those GREAT novels of hers
Scottish63: Jayne, what spurred you to write your first manuscript?
Sue3027: AND THEY ARE GREAT!!!
JAK: I started writing romance because I was reading a lot of it and it got to the point where I wanted to tell the story my way. If you never reach that point, you probably don't become a writer. If you do reach that point - you end up writing.
Sue3027: WHO HAS A LAST QUESTION?
SStev816: Just wanted to say how much I enjoy your books and look forward to reading the latest ones. Thanks
Sue3027: Thanks for saying that Jayne--it is good advice for people thinking of writing!
Scottish63: I second that Sue!
JAK: Thank you all so much for showing up tonight! I had a great time. It would have been embarrassing if no one had come to the chat. Happy New Year!
BkCn LadyJ: Jayne we all want to thank you for giving your time to come here tonight and Christie has a little something for you as a way of showing our appreciation
Scottish63: I have to say that one of the things I like about your books Jayne is that they don't feel like the same story with different character names.
Cardin3838: Thank you Jayne! I have enjoyed tonight so much! Plus your books!
BkCn Zoe: Thanks to everyone -- this has been a GREAT chat
Cardin3838: ::::Applause:::
Sue3027: Thanks for talking with us!
JAK: Any time
Adairski: Thank YOU, Jayne. It was a thrill to talk to you :-)
JaneE2059:
BkCn Zoe: Jayne -- thanks so much for your time tonight! We really enjoyed your answers. Come back again some time ;)
Andriana58: Thanks Jayne...can't get enough of your books!!!!
BkCn Zoe: Adairski: Yes, please do come back!
BkCn Zoe: Thanks to the nice audience too!!!
Cardin3838: Please do Jayne!
Cinnam9825: ====applause==applause
JAK: Thanks again. I had a wonderful time.
VMills822: The books are great!!!
Adairski: ---whistles----
DebMulMan: huzzah!
VMills822: My husband loves for me to read them.
Mboyl: CHEERS!!!! HIP HIP HORRAY!!!
BkCn Zoe: And Jayne, watch your mailbox for a BC mug -- a small token of our appreciation
JAK: I'll keep an eye out for the BC surprise --thanks!
SStev816: Goodnight, everyone......It's been lots of fun.
Cardin3838: So did we Jayne. Thanks again
JAK: Goodnight
