you might remember I posted a message at the time suggesting that hackneys for hire were really icky inside, and one or both of them would probably have had an arrangement with a livery stable, since neither seemed to be rich enough to keep a carriage of their own. A hackney off the street would probably be about as cleanly as a New York subway car.
