Julian, Earl of Ravenwood, has to marry again. His first wife, whom
he married because of her beauty and his passionate love for her, had
proven unfaithful. Because the proud Earl does not want to repeat his
mistake when choosing his new bride, he plans to make the sweet countrybred
spinster Sophie Dorring - a neighbourhood-girl he hardly knows - his new
wife. But Sophie has other ideas, a fact Julian has to discover, when he
arrives at Dorring-House and finds out that the recipient of his honourable
offer has left the house by telling her pitiable grandfather to thank for
the honor of the proposal but "No!" Whatever Julian had guessed when he
left his home that day, he never got the idea this could happen. On his way
home he meets his to-be-bride and asks her for her reasons to refuse. Sophie
tells him, that she doesn't want to lose her freedom. Intrigued and annoyed
by this strange opinion of the meaning of marriage, Julian decides to
agree to Sophie's demands: freedom to choose her books on
her own and not to consummate the marriage until they know each other better. Although
Julian never has planned to wait very long, because he believes
it's just a result of Sophie's bridal fears, he discovers soon after the
marriage the strength in his new wife. Not knowing how to handle her, he
leaves without her for London. But Sophie never believed in obedience to her
husband and so she follows him. There in the glittering world of the 19th
century London Julian and Sophie learn to trust each other, love each other
...
This book is really wonderful - I couldn't put it aside before the end. It
is pure delight to watch the breathtaking seduction of Sophie and Julian
taking place. I recommend it to all of you, who like lighthearted humorous
historicals.
